Collection: Mabe Pearl
A Mabe pearl (pronounced mah-bay) is a type of cultured pearl that’s hemispherical (half-round) in shape, typically grown against the inside shell of an oyster rather than within the oyster’s tissue like round pearls. Because they form on the shell’s interior, they’re sometimes called blister pearls.
Here’s what sets Mabe pearls apart:
- Shape & Look: Dome-shaped with a flat back, perfect for earrings, rings, and pendants.
- Cultivation: Grown by inserting a nucleus against the oyster’s inner shell; the oyster coats it with nacre, creating a half-sphere.
- Size: Often larger than typical round pearls, with striking, bold appearance.
- Common Use: Mounted on a solid backing (often mother-of-pearl) with a covering at the base, giving them a complete, finished look in jewelry.
Mabe pearls are prized for their unique beauty, large size, and colorful overtones — they offer a luxurious look without the high price of fully spherical pearls.
